The glass fruit bowl is based on a fresco in Pompeii. Both paintings are the same dimmensions as the 'Mithras' piece 29.7 x 21cm.
Two other paintings, this time Roman domestic scenes. For the first image I set up several reproduction drinking vessels which I photographed for reference. The glass cups are Gladiators, based on a museum find. The vase with grapes in, in the background is based on the blackware Gladiator vase in Colchester museum, Essex UK.

A quick photo of the finished painting! I used a fresco from Marino, Italy and the original pencil was influenced a carving from 2nd - 3rd Century Rome, now in the Louvre. This painting is now in a private collection. If anyone would like a similar painting of this subject or any other please contact me using either Facebook page or the contact sheet on this website.
Sol and Luna have been worked on, now for the other characters in the scenario. The bull is still to be started. Not long now.
This may not be an absolutely accurate depiction of the the god Sol, but it's my interruption for this painting using several different source materials as reference. The main thing is that I'm enjoying the process of recreating the legend of Mithras!
He won't be finished just yet until I've added the other parts of the overall scene. The snake in the foreground is finished, Mithras and the bull are now in painted line. Sol & Luna are being positioned so that I'm happy with the features.
The start of the panting itself! Though I've used a 4th Century carving as reference of the Mithras legend, I'm using a fresco for the colour work. This is just the under-painted background.
I am at the beginning of painting four different subjects (3 shown here) inspired by a 'Roman' theme, be they figurative, still life or architectural. These examples are A4 size, on wood panel and will be displayed on a stall at the up and coming TORM event at Coventry in November.
1. Mithras, using a 4th Century AD relief carving from the Middle East. 2. Glass fruit bowl with pomegranates and lemons, inspired by a Pompeii fresco. 3. Colchester blackware Gladiator vase with glass Gladiator cups filled with red wine. I am in the market to produce any historical subject matter, either painted in egg tempera or oils, depends on the historical period. The size of the paintings will alter according to subject matter. I am still working out pricing and postage generated through an online shop. If anyone is interested please email me via the contact sheet on this website or my Facebook/Twitter pages. I am intending to make these items into cards, prints or note-lets. So a busy time ahead!!! |
